Tweed tipped to lead way in league finals

TWEED clubs are expected to dominate the finals of the Derek Brouwer Cup junior rugby league competition this weekend.

Byron Bay will host the finals of the annual Group 18 Junior Rugby League competition but 75% of the teams that have qualified for the A and B finals across the seven age divisions hail from the Tweed.

Almost 80 teams from the nine Group 18 clubs lined up in the qualifying rounds at the Cudgen and South Tweed grounds last Saturday, but it was the Tweed teams that dominated.

The Cudgen and South Tweed clubs led the way with six teams each to play in the deciders. Four Murwillumbah teams qualified while reigning champions Byron-Lennox have only three teams in the finals.

Murwillumbah will field teams in the Under-12 and Under-10 A finals as well as in the Under-11 and Under-9 B finals.

South Tweed teams will face off in the Under-11 decider while the club has also qualified for the A finals in Under-8 and the new 5/6 age group. The club will also contest the B finals in the Under-12 and Under-9 age divisions.

Cudgen teams will line up in the Under-7 A final and will field teams in the B finals in the Under-12, Under-10, Under-7 and 5/6 age groups.

The finals will be played at Red Devil Fields from 9am on Sunday.
