‘She wanted it’: Grandpa’s shocking secret stuns family

A GRANDFATHER who raped and sexually abused his granddaughter for nearly three years made a sick claim to police that "she wanted it".

The victim's distraught father shook and cradled his head in his hands, the mother sobbed, as Maroochydore District Court heard horrific details of the man's perverted assaults on the girl when she was aged seven to nine, and he was aged 56 to 59.

Crown prosecutor Greg Cummings said the offences happened often when the victim visited her grandparents' Sunshine Coast home for sleepovers, and sometimes when other people were nearby.

The man, now aged 60, cannot be identified in order to protect his victim.

He pleaded guilty today to one count of maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child, three counts of rape and 14 counts of indecent treatment of a lineal descendant aged under 12.

Members of the public gallery gasped and uttered their disgust at graphic details of the man's persistent, frequent and "demeaning" abuse, which included penetration.

Crown prosecutor Greg Cummings told the court the man did not have a criminal history, but this was not unusual for cases such as this.

"It is a sadly common story that a mature-age offender … comes before the court having lived a relatively blameless life … but has a secret dark side that only unfortunately the child is aware of," Mr Cummings said.

He said the man's offences were particularly perverted given the victim's age, his relationship to her and the fact they happened in a place, which should have been a safe refuge.

Judge Gary Long said the offending came to light when the man's "inappropriate communications" with the girl came to her mother's attention.

Judge Long said after the defendant's wife of more than 30 years left him, he made admissions to police that he had abused his granddaughter.

He said his admissions were diminished by his attempt to shift the blame on his victim, stating "she wanted it".

The man was sentenced to five years' and six months' jail for maintaining a sexual relationship with a child, and lesser concurrent jail terms for the rest of his charges.

He is eligible for parole on September 11, 2021.

Judge Long said the man had completely exploited his granddaughter, and the sentence needed to make clear to him and others in the community that such behaviour would be met with serious punishment.
