Gympie business forced to cut up to 20 jobs

ONE of Gympie's most important manufacturing employers, Carter Holt Harvey, is believed to have laid off up to 20 of its workers, in the face of difficult economic times.

The major building products manufacturer has 17 manufacturing sites in Australia, including its Langton Rd plant in Gympie.

Its Australian operations employ nearly 3000 people, with major products including particleboard, medium density fibreboard, mouldings, flooring and plywood.

It is best known in Gympie for manufacturing wood-chip based fibreboard products.

Tightening demand for building materials is believed to have contributed to the lay-offs.

No further information was available yesterday.

Carter Holt Harvey Group general counsel Denver Simpson told The Gympie Times from group headquarters in Auckland that the company would not be commenting.
