Guitar legend Richie Sambora to headline Soundwave Festival
RICHIE Sambora has been added as a headliner to next month's Soundwave Festival.
Organisers unveiled the American rocker's addition today, just a month out from the first show at Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds.
Best known as the guitarist and one of the founding members of rock juggernaut Bon Jovi, Sambora will be performing solo with support from Aussie guitar prodigy Orianthi.
"You don't know how psyched I am," he told APN on the phone from his home in Los Angeles.
"The opportunity to come down there and play for you guys is just very exciting."
After quitting Bon Jovi's tour last year to spend more time with his 16-year-old daughter Ava,
Sambora said Soundwave's short tour dates were a major draw card.
"It's only five shows, so it's not that long," he said.
"I'm a musician, and you know, I've been home for a while now. Everything's cool; my daughter and I are having a
blast. She's doing very, very well."
Sambora could hardly contain his enthusiasm for his special guest Orianthi, who has been touring with his good mate Alice Cooper.
When Sambora was invited to perform at a New Year's Eve charity event with Cooper, Orianthi, Sammy Hagar and
Steven Tyler in Hawaii, he formed an "instantaneous" chemistry with Orianthi.
"I walked into the rehearsal and Orianthi is playing and I'm like 'oh my God, she is the best guitar player maybe ever, better than me for sure'," he said.
"She's Australia's gem. To me she's a killer man, and also just a lovely girl."
Sambora joins previously announced headliners Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains.
Also added to the line-up are Filter, I Killed The Prom Queen, The Ghost Inside, Authority Zero, Dark3CII, The Defiled and The Dangerkids.
Soundwave plays Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds on February 22 and Sydney's Olympic Park on February 23.
Tickets are available through OzTix and Soundwavefestival.com.
