Voss backs influential Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown

BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has defended under-performing captain Jonathan Brown.

The skipper has been under enormous scrutiny after a scratchy start to the season with some suggesting this could be the 31-year-old's last.

Brown only managed six possesions and two goals in the defeat by West Coast on Saturday and was held for most of the game by Eric McKenzie.

But Voss said he fully expected Brown, who is in the final year of his contract with the Lions, to play next season.

The Lions coach said Brown was a victim of his enormous success, saying that when he wasn't "taking 12 marks and kicking four goals" he was judged too harshly.

"His leadership around the place is second to none, there's not too many greater," Voss said.

"His influence is huge on these players and the confidence he gives around others is significant.

"When he does get back to 12 marks and four goals a game and those sort of things everyone wants him to be, that'll be the cream on top."
